Background

The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation is the UK’s only charity dedicated to defeating lung cancer, and has been working with Redeem to raise funds through its Recycling Appeal since 2000.  The money generated has been diverted into the Foundation’s three main areas of activity – lung cancer research, support for patients and their families and tobacco control programmes which include educating young people about the dangers of smoking and health awareness in the workplace.

Objectives

  • To identify a simple source of fundraising through implementing a mobile phone and printer cartridge recycling scheme
  • To generate greater awareness for the Foundation amongst businesses and organisations across the UK and encourage them to take part in the Recycling Appeal

Campaign Activity

A very successful campaign has been undertaken to drive awareness amongst existing supporters and to encourage others to become involved across the UK.

Promotional activity included:

  • Channel
  • Online
  • Direct marketing
  • Advertising
  • PR and editorial

Success

Since 2000:

  • Raised over £200,000 of funds to be invested into the Foundation’s three areas of activity
  • Generated support from tens of thousands of people across the UK
  • Helped to divert tonnes of potentially harmful waste from landfill

Janine Drew, Fundraising Manager at the Foundation said: “We are delighted to have reached this point in the appeal and would like to thank everyone who has supported the campaign by sending items to be recycled. It really does go to show, you can make something out of nothing. We urge people who still currently throw away their mobile phones and cartridges to take just a few moments of time to donate them instead. It’s free, it’s simple to do and it really does make a difference.”
