Ring in the New Year by helping Scope break a world record for recycling mobile phones
8 January 2010
Did you get a state-of-the-art new mobile phone for Christmas and want to get rid of your old one in a way that lets you do your bit for charity and helps set an exciting new world record at the same time?
Then get the New Year off to a good start by donating your old handset to your nearest Scope shop during the week of Friday 8 - Friday 15 January to support the charity’s work with disabled people.
It is estimated that there are approximately 7.4 million mobiles gathering dust in cupboards and drawers across Yorkshire alone. Scope has teamed up with recycling partner Redeem Plc and hopes to break the Guinness World Record for collecting the greatest number of used mobile phones donated in one week.
To recycle your phone hand it in to a member of staff behind the counter at your local Scope shop between 8 and 15 January and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Scope receives a cash donation for every phone donated but only those phones received during the specified week in January will count as part of the Guinness World Record attempt.
There are 25 Scope shops across Yorkshire taking part, including branches in Knaresborough, Ripon, Scarsborough, Whitby, York, Selby and Richmond, Acomb, Bridlington, Leeds, Wakefield, Batley, Bingley, Bradford, Otley, Castleford, Morley, Huddersfield, Pudsey, Keighley, Dewsbury, Doncaster, Rotherham and Goole.
Donating your old handset has many benefits. As well as helping support Scope’s work, it helps you de-clutter any old phones taking up valuable space in your home and enables you to “go greener” by diverting handsets away from landfill sites where they can cause pollution and contribute to global warming.
Jayne Edwards, shop area manager from Scope said: “We are calling on people to dig out their old phones - and help us ring in changes for Scope’s work with disabled people. Don’t put recycling on hold and dump your phone, donate it to Scope instead! Every phone counts and will bring us a step closer to achieving a new world record breaker.”
Jamie Rae, Chief Executive for Redeem Plc said:
“We want as many people to take part and help us break a world record so we can raise lots of money for Scope. With approximately four million people predicted to have upgraded phones this year, this is a great way to dispose of your old ones!”
Find your local Scope shop at www.scope.org.uk/shop/shopsmap.php.
To count as part of the world record phones have to be delivered to a Scope shop during the week 8-15 January. However, if you cannot make it to a shop before 15 January and would like to still support this recycling appeal then please call 020 7 619 7777 or visit www.recyclingappeal.com/scope for a freepost envelope.
